58 Teams 'til Kickoff: Mississippi State
This preview of the Mississippi St. Bulldogs was provided by Jeremy Flint from For Whom the Cowbell Tolls.
What has Mississippi State done this off season to give fans something to look forward to in 2010?
The hiring of Manny Diaz as defensive coordinator after Carl Torbush left for Nebraska has lots of fans talking. Diaz seems to have the same frantic energy as Mullen and fans are curious how that will play out on the field.
What will the offense look like. With the departure of Anthony Dixon to the draft, as well as Christian Ducre, we are without a solid 1-2 punch at running back. Dixon was the feature of our offense last year and although there are a number of running backs on the roster, most are unproven except for Robert Elliot. Also, at QB, most fans assume that the job is Chris Relf's to lose. He is a running-style quarterback which should bring another angle to our game plan. Waiting in the wings, however, is Tyler Russell. Fans are anxious to see what he can do and if he will contribute this season.
Our schedule is definitely a tough one. We go on the road to LSU, Alabama, Florida, Houston and Ole Miss, not to mention home games against Auburn, Kentucky and Arkansas. Welcome to the SEC.Our team ranking is about right considering our past few years and the questions we have on offense and defense this year.
What do you expect to see in 2010?
I think we can pull out 7 wins. Many of the playmakers that made last year's teams so good have moved on to the NFL or graduated, so the playing field is somewhat level.
I don't think we have ever had one of those. Refs are paying too much attention to the game to worry about what the noise level is like. The new "Cowbell Compromise" is a step in the right direction and hopefully fans will respect the terms of the rule.
Head Coach: Dan Mullen (Second Year)
Offensive Coordinator: Les Koenning (Second Year)
Defensive Coordinator: Manny Diaz (First year)

A good team instead of Alcorn State would have put them solidly at the #1 schedule. Five wins would not be a bad year given where this team has finished and the aggressiveness of this schedule.
