Take Two: Kentucky
[This series is for those times when communication fails and deadlines are not met. Maybe I should give more than a few days notice...]
Glenn Logan from A Sea Of Blue has been generous in preparing this preview of the 2010 Kentucky Wildcats. As you can see, this is much more elaborate than my take.
What have the Kentucky Wildcats done this off season to increase the excitement around their 2010 football team?
Several things. First, we have a new coach, and that's always exciting. Even though Joker has been around the program for a long time, there is a feeling that maybe he was being forced by Brooks into being a bit too conservative. That could be wrong, but hope springs eternal.
Second, Randall Cobb and Derrick Locke. Both these guys are dynamic offensive players with the kind of ability that can break games wide open and get wins for the Wildcats. Randall Cobb is one of the most amazing and talented players we have had around UK in a while, and he can hurt the opposition in so many ways. Locke is just hard to stop if he gets a little blocking, and his sprinter speed and good hands make him a major threat every time he gets into space.
Finally, our receiving corps has matured and looks to break out, which will hopefully take some pressure off the passing game. The biggest problem we had last year was a lack of ability to catch the ball and run the right routes consistently. All you had to do was put your best cover corner on Cobb and you could be assured of sound pass defense. That's likely to change this year.
The big question is who will emerge as quarterback. The odds favor the experience of senior Mike Hartline, but sophomore Morgan Newton did an excellent job in relief of an injured Hartline last year, and he has more big-play potential and the added dimension of being a running threat. Finally, there is redshirt freshman Ryan Mossakowski, the guy with the most potential to be a star quarterback in the SEC. He has a rocket arm and we managed to steal him away from the Texas schools, so you know this kid is talented.
Second, we have to wonder about our offensive line. We lost a lot of talent there last year, and it remains to be seen if this year's line is ready to deliver for Locke and Cobb, not to mention whoever winds up at quarterback.
Third, the linebacking corps. We lost two good ones last year in Micah Johnson and Sam Maxwell. Danny Travathan returns starter experience, but from there the pickings are young.
Probably. As far as SOS, when you play in the SEC, your schedule is automatically tough. UK plays a very weak out of conference schedule, especially since Louisville has been down for the last few years.
The Wildcats have potential, but they have a new coach and a lot of new players at key positions. It's hard to rank them too high in the pre-season based on that.
I think this team has the potential to go 7-5, or even 8-4. Tennessee looks to be a bit down this year, Florida is likely to be good but not like they were with Tebow, and Auburn is coming to Lexington which gives us a chance to beat them for the second straight year.
One of the big keys is getting the early win versus the Louisville Cardinals. If Louisville takes that one, Kentucky has a tougher time getting to 7-5.
I also expect to see UK break one (or hopefully more) of the embarrassing streaks against South Carolina, Florida or Tennessee.
Well, I'm not sure I qualify for that. There are a bunch of great Wildcats blogs out there who do a fantastic job, and a few of them are bigger than A Sea of Blue.
But hopefully, none are better.

I think I have been more than clear where I think one can go for Kentucky Basketball information.

Better hope Kentucky beats South Carolina or Tennessee….because they ain’t going to beat Florida to end that streak.
The Once and Future King
I don't know.
Kentucky in the past few decades has been at least as good as Ole Miss.
