Around SBN: SB Nation interviews Jerome Bettis

Expansion Forecast: 6/12

Here is what we know:

In 2011 Boise State is headed for the MWC and Nebraska for the Big 12.
In 2012 Colorado is leaving for the PAC 10

Here is what we think we know:

The PAC 10 has invited Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to join in 2012
Texas A&M is more interested in the SEC
The SEC is not saying anything
The WAC will invite a few FCS schools to shore up their ranks.

Rumors are swirling around what is going to happen to the Big 12, MWC, SEC and college football in general. Lets see if we can make some sense of this and see when the next cards will be played and by whom.

Star-divide

Several of the teams invited to the PAC 10 have indicated an interest in the SEC. If the SEC has any interest in these schools, now is the time to act. Meetings will be taking place next Tuesday to examine the PAC 10 invite. Once they accept a PAC 10 invite it will become far more difficult for them to jump on an SEC invite.

If the PAC 10 invite is not accepted next week the SEC rumors will look more credible. This could lead to a stale mate this year that would be addressed next off season. Or the SEC could step up the pace of any expansion plans they have and invite the Big 12 teams now and wait to make other moves, like the Big 10 did with Nebraska.

I really think the uncertainty in the Big 12 is too big to go unanswered this off season. I expect these answers to be hammered out over the next two weeks. Then everyone will take a break until next off season when the final pieces are put in place.

The only move that can be expected with any certainty is the WAC inviting Montana and perhaps a few other FCS schools to fill the void left by Boise State.

Moratorium

Isn’t there a moratorium on FCS programs moving up to FBS through July 2011? Would that moratorium be waved so that the WAC can reload on west coast FCS programs?

If the WAC expands the teams would start playing in the WAC in 2011.

I do believe they would not be bowl eligible for a couple years as they formally transition.
