Postseason Constraint #15: Avoid competing with the NFL for viewership

[Editor's note: This is part of a series examining the real world constraints on any proposed postseason design. For the previous entries is is best to start at the introduction of the series. This is derived from pages 94 and 95 of my plan to fix the BCS]

FBS football currently generates less than half the revenue that the NFL makes with four times as many teams. Cooperate sponsors will favor NFL over college football any day. Fans don't want to have to choose between NFL games and college games when they can watch both.

NFL is also played mostly on Sunday and some schools refuse to play on Sunday for religious reasons. I have yet to see a playoff design that failed to accomplish this ideal.

Star-divide

Old Bowl System

Bowls do not want to compete with the NFL for viewers nor limit their team selection options by playing on Sunday. Bowls rarely schedule Sunday games.

BCS

The BCS is tied to the bowls and has the same designs, including rare Sunday games.

A Tier Based Plus-One

No games added by this design would be played on a Sunday.

A Flexible Championship System

No new Sunday games here. Move along.

MWC Proposal

It might even be possible to align the championship game with the bye week before the Super Bowl in the MWC Proposal. This would be huge for many fans.

Enhanced Bowl Season

I actually got this ideal from these guys. This design also moves the championship game to the bye week before the Super Bowl.

The Wetzel Plan

No new Sunday games here either.

college football is still the 2nd most popular sport in america. 30 years ago it might have been

7th. i call that progress. i’ll take college football any day over pro football b/c of bone head decsion’s like the one colt mccoy and his father made in bcs ncg. he could have went back in and tried to be the hero. daddy did not want further injury and not get that guaranteed money from the nfl. mccoy came back for his senior season to win the bcs ncg.once he got there it was a different story. sorry to tell you colt but nfl players hit harder than bama does and your wonderlic score was not good and i’ll say you will fail as a nfl qb and i think even your dad agrees with me. since he is then one pulling the strings. mccoy will always be a puzzy in my eye’s. most college football players would have played b/c ncg’s don’t come that often. the kids just try harder imo.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. I was building a house, I don't deserve this, deserves have nothing to do with it. Bang. "Unforgiven" I drink your milkshake. I drink it up! "There Will BE Blood"

With Apologies To Randy Edsall, The Big East Remains Mostly Harmless

FILE -- This is an Oct. 18, 2008 file photo showing Connecticut corner back Jasper Howard (6) trying to get the crowd into the game during the fourth quarter of an NCAA college football game against Rutgers, in Piscataway, N.J.
