2010 Orange Bowl Recap

January 5th 2010 - Miami Florida

"But wait just one second," you say, "I thought you said you weren't going to watch this game, how can you dare to recap it?"

First, it's my blog and I need an orange bowl recap. If i has a co-contributor I could have delegated this task, but alas you are stuck with me. Second, I still have the play-by-play I rely on heavily for the recaps anyways. I just don't have the emotional swing of the game from having watched it.

Oh, and others have recapped it already. Here is what I see after the fact:

The Iowa Hawkeyes scored on two drives early in the first quarter and stuffed Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets when they had the ball. A pick 6 at the end of the first quarter gave the appearance of a game much closer than it actually was at this point.

Star-divide

Georgia Tech's defense stiffened in the second quarter and provided hope that if their offense could get moving they could gain back some momentum. Iowa ended the half with a dirve that stalled out just short of field goal range making the halftime score 14-7.

Georgia Tech started the third with a long drive ending in a missed field goal. Iowa answered with a long drive of their own, but made their field goal, taking a 10 point lead.

Georgia Tech then answered with a long touchdown drive to close the gap to 3 points early in the fourth. After a few traded punts Iowa's offense got it together and took a 10 point lead. One defense stop latter and the game was theirs.

The final result is that the Big 10 has finally gotten back to having winning bowl seasons, and winning BCS bowls.

Which is the Better BCS Bowl?

While the Big10 only finished 4-3 in bowls, they might have had the most impressive set of wins of any conference. All four victories came as underdogs, and beat 4 different Top 15 teams.

Four teams ended up with 10+ wins, and both Northwestern and Minnesota could have won their games too. Even Mich St, playing a team ranked way ahead of them and without 8 suspended players even hung tough.

All in all, a very satisfying bowl season for the Big 10 this year.
