Gut Reaction BCS Bowl Previews
I will be giving detailed preview for each BCS bowl once every five days. This is simply my initial reaction to the 2009 BCS selections.
Texas Longhorns vs. Alabama Crimson Tide
The much anticipated SEC vs. Big 12 undefeated showdown will become a reality. With the final weeks and growing gap between #1 and #2 this week in the standings the question will be whether this year will be a repeat of 2001 when runaway leader Miami(FL) ran away from every other team or 2006 when Ohio State appeared to be head and shoulders above the crowd only to fall to to Florida in the National Championship Game.
Boise St. Broncos vs. TCU Horned Frogs
For the first time in BCS history two teams from at large conferences will participate in a BCS bowl in the same year. Pairing these teams against each other will raise questions about whether this was a ploy to produce an easily dismissible game.
Some will say that one benefit of a BCS bowl for at large teams is the ability to face off against one of the top teams from one of the top conferences to prove their worth to the nation.
I would argue that TCU and Boise State have already proven to the nation that they each are comparable to any other team they could have played and they each have an opportunity to play one of the top of the class teams from 2009.
Oregon Ducks vs. Ohio St. Buckeyes
Ho hum. The most boring of the BCS selections. This will be a good game featuring the traditional champions in the greatest bowl game in the land, the granddaddy of them all.
Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Florida Gators
Cincinnati, despite a #3 ranking in the BCS standings, fell to the final BCS selection while Florida fell from the National Championship Game in Atlanta.
Can Florida do what Alabama could not in 2008 in keeping focus after a disappointing loss?
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Iowa Hawkeyes
The first thing that jumps out at me is that this game has Iowa over Penn St. One of the two eligible Big 10 teams was going to get in and they fell here.
Eligible on the Outside
Penn St. and LSU lost to post conference members selected over them. Virginia Tech's loss to North Carolina sealed the deal. LSU lost to both SEC teams selected over them. BYU's devastating home loss to FSU that made their selection unpalatable.
At the end of the day no teams were left out for a lower ranked team in the BCS at large selections for the fourth time in the BCS's twelve years.

The BCS gets it wrong... AGAIN
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/304036-ncaa-screws-tcu-and-boise-state-yet-again
I would bet money that TCU would have beat Georga Tech and Boise St. would have beat Iowa had they had the chance to play them… but of course they pit them against eachother to avoid the chance of that happening.
I'll have what you're smoking!
I think most agree with you.
Doesn’t that mean that both TCU and Boise State got a better opponent than they would have gotten if they played Georgia Tech or Iowa?
Now swap Boise State for Cincinnati and things get interesting …

You're not a 16 team playoff proponent are you?
I knew of a KSU Wild at a different site once …
Either way, I am glad to have your opinons!

8 team Playoff proponent
No, I am not a 16 team playoff proponent. Let’s have a little fun here Ben.
1. Alabama SEC Champion
2. Texas Big XII Champion
3. Cincinatti Big East Champion
4. TCU Mountain West Champion
6. Boise St. WAC Champion
7. Oregon PAC 10 Champion
5. Florida At Large
8. Ohio St. At Large (Big 10 Champion)
The top 6 BCS ranked champions recieve automatic bids with the two at large spots going to the next two top ranked BCS teams regardless of whether they won their conference or not.
Week 1
9. Georgia Tech at 1. Alabama
5. Florida at 2. Texas
7. Oregon at 3. Cincinatti
6. Boise St. at 4. TCU
Ironically Boise St. and TCU play eachother… but unlike the real scenario; one of them would have the chance to move on and possibly win the National Championship.
Big difference.
I'll have what you're smoking!
Under MY Plan...
We would have this.
Ohio St @ Bama in the Sugar
Oregon @ Texas in the Rose
Boise St @ Cinci in the Fiesta
and
Florida @ TCU in the Orange
yes yes yes. I know people will pick apart the Location assignments. That is why as part of my plan a SELECTION COMMITTEE would decide which bowl gets which matchup. Or you could have PREASSIGNED matchups so there is no chance of biased assignments.

Hope you are well Ben. I do think TCU and Boise St. are better than Iowa or Georgia Tech but I think pitting those two (non BCS) teams against eachother specifically was a slight.
Think of what would have happened if TCU beat Georgia Tech convincingly, Boise St. beat Iowa convincingly, Cincinatti beat Florida (convincing or not) and Texas stuggled to beat Alabama or vice versa.
That would be a nightmare for the BCS, and the BCS bowls made sure that couldn’t happen by pitting TCU and Boise St. against eachother.
I'll have what you're smoking!
Ok wait,
That was NMLSonner that was the 16 team guy…
good days, good days.

As for your scenerio...
What if Texas beats Alabama in a close one and Cincinnati beats Florida in a nail biter?
If TCU or BYU dominate the Fiesta Bowl they could sneak into the AP vote.

I Suppose
I suppose TCU or Boise St. could sneak in an AP vote if they won convincingly enough in that scenario… BUT, that doesn’t change the fact that neither TCU or Boise St. have a legitimate shot at the BCS National Championship.
I know I’m preaching to the chior but it is very sad to me that teams like Cincinnatti, TCU, and Boise St. can have the kind of seasons they had and still not have a real shot to win it all.
The BCS formula can stay the same, but the premise that there will be two clear cut “deserving” teams at the end of the year is completely bogus.
I'll have what you're smoking!
This doesn't have anything to do with the first 3 years of the BCS does it?
My research uncovered that a certain team got left out for lower ranked teams each of those years.
BCS Evolution -- Punctuating the Equilibrium - twitter
It really doesn't
Kansas State got hosed the first few years of the BCS… especially the first year. But the reason I want an 8 team playoff is because I am tired of watching deserving teams get hosed. Cincinnatti, TCU, and Boise St. deserve a shot and everyone (including the BCS) knows it. I agree that the BCS is an improvement over the old system, but that doesn’t mean it can’t improve and evolve.
I'll have what you're smoking!
I agree...
and I might go so far to argue that if the BCS would seriously consider examining real alternatives no other organization would be better suited to run the college football postseason.
