What if Boise State were playing TCU instead of New Mexico State?
What if the MWC and WAC allowed thier champions to meet during the final Saturday before BCS selection? Since neither conference holds a conference championship game it should be merely a formality to gain an NCAA exemption to allow such a game.
This is not a new idea by any stretch. The timeliness of brushing off this concept is irresistible.
This game would have featured two teams ranked in the BCS top 25 every year since 2003 and all four at large conference teams. The winner of this game would most likely earn a BCS berth even under the current rules.
TCU and Boise State would have one last chance to impress voters before the final standings are compiled.
Lavell Edwards Stadium in Provo Utah seats 62,000 fans and would be a central location for both conferences. Using the larger venues from both leagues and alternating annually would be a plus. Or the game could be played on the winning conferences turf the next year.
Both conferences could use the added revenue that would potentially be near or higher than the top bowl revenues for each conference.
In 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009 a team from both conferences was in range to earn a BCS berth. This game would have allowed Boise State (three times now) and BYU to have earned a spot in a BCS bowl. Oh, and it could push teams over the bump in the BCS standings.
If this game were scheduled tomorrow TCU would not have to worry about Cincinnati being on their heels if they took care of their business at hand. If they won and Texas lost they would be in the championship game.
Boise State would not have to worry about whether a BCS bowl will choose to make history by selecting a second team from an at large conference. If they beat TCU they would be guaranteed a BCS bowl.
College football fans would have another opportunity to watch these top teams highlighted that they don't often get to watch.
I'm sorry but I really don't see the drawback here. It's not like the teams in this conference wouldn't love to compete and settle the matter on the field. This could be marketed and developed as an inter conference rivalry that would be second only the the SEC-ACC rivalry. No other conferences would have the history needed to make such an inter conference rivalry work in football.
Maybe the Big 10 and Big East. Maybe.

Conference Championship Weekend
I’m so happy you posted such a smart proposal.
My own idea is to have ALL conferences play other out-of-conference teams this week, as I posted earlier in OCT.
Thanks to people like you , we may someday get a fair , streamlined system , that works.

Solution 13
I’ve wanted this MWC/WAC title game to happen for years, for all the same reasons.
You’re one tweak away from an easy BCS fix.

I've actually talked to others about something similar to this for all of the non-BCS conferences
I don’t think that you’ll ever see the MWC champ, WAC champ, or the winner of a MWC vs. WAC game ever get an automatic BCS bid. However, I think that you can eventually convince the BCS conferences to always allow the top non-BCS team to receive an automatic bid (regardless of whether it’s in the top 12) since that’s essentially what’s happening in practice, anyway. From there, the non-BCS conferences can set up a “play-in” game whereby the top 2 ranked non-BCS teams (with caveat that they must be from different conferences) play each other on Championship Saturday. The non-BCS conferences can split the revenue from this game as well as providing the winner of the game a win over a quality team that it might not have otherwise played during the regular season.

BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall
offered this as an adjustment to the SEC’s plus-one where the top two at large conference champions would play for the final slot in the plus one.
He also suggested this would often be a better way to determine BCS bowl participation between two close teams.
From the BCS’s perspective it would likely remove the possibility of two at large conference teams from being eligible.
I don’t see the issue.

Well, I guess we will all get to see TCU vs. Boise State anyways.
