2010 Gator Bowl - #16 West Virginia vs. Florida St.

January 1st 2010, 1:00 ET CBS

Jacksonville Florida

This year's Gator Bowl features Bobby Bowden ending his storied career against the team where he made his start.

[ "We Are Marshall" was historically accurate when they depicted Bobby Bowden as a West Virginia assistant that gave Marshall access to their film room to help them recover from the tragedy that has since erased the memories of their suspension from the NCAA and MAC due to numerous scandals that lead to the firing of the football and basketball coaches in 1969. ]

The Florida St. Seminoles are 5-0-1 in the Gator Bowl while West Virginia Mountaineers are 1-5. The most recent appearance by either team was West Virginia's 2007 win over Georgia Tech. Florida St. leads the all time series 2-0, in the 1982 and January 2001 Gator Bowls.

Will Bobby Bowden go off to the sunset with a win?

#17 Pittsburgh (19-16)
#5 Florida (10-37)
#9 Georgia Tech (44-49)
#14 BYU (54-28)
#15 Miami (34-38)
Ranking #22 $46
Record 9-3 6-6

With the differences in schedule and a quality win over BYU one could justify narrowing the three game gap in the records. I appraise this as about two wins, leaving FSU a game short.

West Virginia's Ball

West Virginia

Florida St.
Defense
Points 26.58 30.75
Yards 381.6 443.5

Per Play 4.68 5.34
Passing 198.1 240.3
Per Play 7.25 8.90
Turnovers 24 26

Florida gives up more on defense than West Virginia is used to gaining on offense. I expect this game to be a fast paced game leaning to the FSU side of the stat sheet, though maybe with more rushing and less passing.

Florida St.'s Ball

West Virginia
Defense
Florida St.
Offense
Points 20.79 29.83
Yards 330.0 430.5
Per Play 4.98 6.39
Rushing 118.4 143.2
Per Play 3.59 4.57
Passing 211.6 278.8
Per Play 6.36 8.10
Turnovers 23 26

ACC defenses have been suspect ll season, padding FSU's stats here a bit. I wil lean towards West Virginia's column here.

Prediction

It is a little sad that Bowden's career could end with a whimper instead of a bang.

West Virginia 30 FSU 21

Proof positive that bowl games are all about making $$$ at the expense of schools and players

Florida State has no business being in this game.

Woe is the ACC in terms of bowl record this year. Imagine what could have been if Florida State went to the Emerald Bowl where they should have been placed?

Orange – Georgia Tech vs. Iowa
Peach – Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee (W)
Gator – Miami vs. West Virginia (W?)
Citrus Jr. – Clemson vs. Wisconsin (W?)
Music City – Boston College vs. Kentucky (W)
Car Care – North Carolina vs. Pittsburgh (L)
Emerald – Florida State vs. USC (L)

5-2 looks a lot better than 3-4 or 2-5.

and pairing him with his old school.
