2009 Sun Bowl - Oklahoma vs. #21 Stanford

December 31st 2009, 2:00 ET CBS

The 76th Sun Bowl in El Paso Texas will feature the Oklahoma Sooners and the Stanford Cardinal. Both teams have won two previous Sun Bowls and have yet to lose one.

Oklahoma leads the all time series 3-1 with a two game winning streak. The last meeting was a 19-7 win in Norman Oklahoma in 1984.

Who will win a quarter century later?

#2 Texas 13-16
#14 BYU 13-14
#15 Miami(FL) 20-21
#19 Oklahoma St. 27-0
#22 Nebraska 3-10
#7 Oregon 51-42
#18 Oregon St. 28-38
#20 Arizona 38-43
#24 USC 55-21
Ranking #25 #20
Record 7-5 8-4

Those are some mighty fine schedules. I'll give Stanford the slight early edge, since they won their game with a top 10 team.

Oklahoma's Ball

Per Play 3.78 4.49
Passing 278.5 252.0
Per Play 7.14 7.49
Turnovers 24 15

These numbers are fairly even and nothing suggests this is not what we should expect in El Paso.

Per Play 4.06 6.70
Rushing 88.6 224.3

Passing 184.9 217.1

Turnovers 28 15

Something is going to give when these two teams meet. This is where the biggest questions arise. Oklahoma has seen some fierce offenses and been left unscathed, so if anything the numbers should lean towards their column.

Prediction

It looks like my gut look was wrong. The stats appear to favor Oklahoma, especially if they get a few turnovers which favor them significantly.

I picked Stanford to win this match-up, but the way the Pac10 is faring so far is not giving me much hope for that pick.

yep the MWC looks real good so far. I expect TCU to finish off the sweep. Am hoping my Big 10 can finish 4-3 or 5-2 at least.

Holy smokes … Sam Bradford actually just completed a pass in this game. Thought he wasn’t going to play.

And down goes another Pac10 team.

They were supposed to be on par with the SEC, but if OSU beats Oregon tomorrow, they will finish a poor 2-5 this season.

The SEC has not played yet

The PAC 10 might be on par with the SEC.

I would rather enjoy watching that if it comes true.

same here.

Interesting tidbit … if OSU beats Oregon, they will have beaten five 10 win teams this season.
